As heavy rains continue to devastate parts of the country, the government has issued an urgent advisory, warning residents in flood-prone areas to prioritize their safety.
The advisory comes in the wake of widespread destruction, particularly in Kisumu County, where Ahero town in Nyando sub-county experienced severe flooding on Friday, November 29, 2024.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, the river burst its bank early on Friday submerging homes in the villages of Kamidumbi and Panadol.
In a statement on Saturday, November 30, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration confirmed that heavy rainfall in the Lake Victoria Basin and North-Western regions had led to isolated flooding incidents.
“Evacuation is ongoing in areas such as Kapuothe, Nanga, Lower Katuoro, Wigwa, and part of Dunga in Kisumu Central Sub- County where about 200 households have been affected and approximately 100 acres of crops washed away,” the Interior Ministry said.
The Ministry noted that the ongoing rains are also causing damage in other regions, including North Eastern, South Eastern, Coast, Central, and South Rift Valley, where storms are expected over the weekend but should subside soon.
In Nairobi, Friday night’s downpour left parts of the city submerged, with clogged drainage systems exacerbating the flooding.
Meanwhile, disaster response teams have ramped up efforts to provide support to affected communities nationwide, including evacuation operations and relief supplies
Safety guidelines
Amid the unfolding crisis, the Kenya Red Cross has shared 10 critical safety tips to help residents stay safe as floodwaters rise:
1. Move to higher ground: Evacuate to elevated areas immediately if flooding occurs.
2. Beware of moving water: Just six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet.
3. Avoid driving in floodwaters: A foot of moving water can sweep away your vehicle.
4. Test water depth: Use a stick to gauge the depth of standing or moving water.
5. Turn off electricity: Switch off the main power supply if your home floods.
6. Stay away from streams and rivers: Avoid parking or conducting activities near waterways during heavy rains.
7. Avoid downed power lines: Do not wade through muddy water where power lines may have fallen.
8. Avoid flooded bridges: Driving over flooded bridges is extremely dangerous.
9. Stay informed: Listen to radio or TV updates for real-time weather and safety information.
10. Emergency contact: Dial 1199 for immediate assistance during emergencies.
While the flooding has caused significant disruption, the government and humanitarian organizations are urging Kenyans to remain vigilant and prioritize safety.
Efforts are underway to ensure displaced families receive necessary aid, and the public is encouraged to heed warnings and cooperate with authorities.
