President William Ruto has finally fired a response to his critics who have been saying that he will be a one-term president.
Speaking during a Sunday church service at United Pentecostal Church of Kenya in Dagoretti North, Nairobi, on Sunday, January 12, 2025, President Ruto said that there was a time when some people believed that he would not even make it to any term as a president.
Ruto banks on God
According to the Head of State, the naysayers had their wish, but God had his way, he also noted that he is currently proud to be leading Kenya as a president.
“Kuna watu wanaongea mambo ya one term, two terms, three terms. Nataka niwaambie mimi pale nyuma kuna watu ata hawakufikiria nitakuwa na any term, so Mungu ni nani? Mimi nimefurahi sana kwamba Mungu amenipatia nafasi hii niwe kiongozi wa Kenya, mimi ambaye nilikuwa mtu mdogo sijulikani, familia yangu haijulikani. I am a very proud president of the Republic of Kenya,” Ruto said.
He further defended his move to work with the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) side in a broad-based government arrangement, arguing that a lot can only be achieved if people work together as a nation.
“Na mimi nataka niwaeleze kwamba kuna kazi Mungu amenipatia nifanye Kenya hii na nitafanya. God has given me an opportunity to lead this country and an assignment to transform Kenya and I have every intention to ensure that we transform our nation. Ndio sababu niko tayari kuungana na viongozi wote na kuunganisha wakenya wote ndo tuweze kutimiza mapenzi ya Mungu kwa Kenya hii,” Ruto remarked.
ODM leaders defend Ruto
A section of ODM leaders who had accompanied President Ruto to the church service used the opportunity to defend him, giving him an assurance that he was not going to be a one-term president as claimed by his critics.
Alego Usonga Member of Parliament (MP) Samuel Atandi who was accorded a chance to speak on the church podium assured President Ruto of a re-lection in 2027.
Atandi told Ruto that as long as he continues working with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and puts God by his side, nothing will happen to him.
The ODM lawmaker also gave an assurance that the country’s economy is expected to jumpstart in 2025, and that money will be flowing in Kenyans’ pockets.
Atandi went ahead to urge Ruto to ignore the noises from his critics, arguing that they will be stopped.
“Some people are saying that you are a one-term president. I want to tell you your excellency that as long as you are with God and you are with Baba, I don’t think you will be a one-term president. So that is the assurance I wanted to give you and I want to tell you that as an economist, I know that our economy is jumpstarting and this year we are going to see money flowing in the pockets of Kenyans and the noises that are running across the country, we are going to stop them,” he said.
The lawmaker further said that the Nyanza people have been praying for the head of state since he has been working for them by delivering development projects such as electricity and infrastructure.
“We are praying for you as people from Nyanza as you are working for us. You have brought us electricity and infrastructure and you continue working with Baba for the betterment of this country. Nothing will happen to you, don’t be scared,” Atandi said.
