Man brutally attacked at his house in burglary incident turns to person of interest in crime

In what could be a case of someone having a taste of his own medicine, police officers apprehended a person of interest linked to criminal activities in Likoni, Mombasa.

In a completely unexpected turn of events, the man nabbed by police was reported to have been a victim of a burglary that left him with serious injuries.

According to a statement shared on X by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) late at night on Saturday, January 18, 2025, the person of interest identified as Arafat Juma Saidi was attacked by a group which broke into his house bearing machetes and other crude weapons.

The miscreants gained entry by climbing over the main gate and then breaking the steel door of the house using strong metal bars. They stole one mobile phone and an unknown amount of money before escaping, leaving Arafat with two deep cuts on his head, necessitating medical attention at a nearby hospital.

Distress call

As the burglary unfolded, neighbours raised a distress call informing police officers from Inuka Police Station in Likoni Sub-County. The officers responded swiftly and arrived at the scene of the crime.

However, according to DCI’s statement, Arafat had left to seek medical attention at a nearby medical facility.

At the crime scene, the police officers claimed that they discovered a hole in the ceiling board of the house and upon gaining entry they discovered other items including a blood-stained machete, TVs, 61 mobile phones and a public address system among other things.

“The officers, led by the Officer Commanding Inuka Police Station, rushed to the scene and established that criminals armed with machetes and other crude weapons had broken into the rented house of Arafat Juma Saidi. The miscreants gained entry by climbing over the main gate and then breaking the steel door of the house using strong metal bars. They stole one mobile phone and an unknown amount of money before escaping, leaving Arafat with two deep cuts on his head, necessitating medical attention at a nearby hospital,” DCI’s statement read in part.

“Upon revisiting the scene, officers discovered a hole in the ceiling board of the house. On peeping through the hole, the officers unearthed four machetes (one blood-stained), two kitchen knives, two televisions (55-inch and 43-inch), sixty-one mobile phones of various brands, one portable public address system, one card reader, two copies of ID cards bearing the name Arafat Juma Saidi, and one East African passport bearing the same name,” it added.

Traced and arrested

Following the discovery of the items, DCI explained that the police officers traced the person of interest to a nearby medical facility where he was apprehended.

The person of interest is expected to be processed before arraignment.

Meanwhile, they did not immediately give details of the progress of the burglary incident and the people who executed it which led to their latest unearthing.

“Following this development, Arafat was traced to Sagawa Medical Clinic, where he was arrested and escorted to Inuka Police Station along with the recovered exhibits, awaiting further processing and subsequent arraignment,” DCI’s statement added.
