One arrested as police seize bhang worth Ksh2.1M

Police in Mombasa have arrested one person of interest and seized 71 kilograms of bhang worth Ksh2.1 million.

The person of interest, identified as 35-year-old Betty Valley Sangara, was arrested following a routine police check at the Likoni Ferry area.

“Police Officers at the Ferry Island Lockup have arrested a trafficker and seized bhang valued at Sh2,130,000. This bust resulted from a routine police check, where officers stopped a blue Piaggio tuk-tuk, registration number KTWC 327M, for inspection,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stated on Monday, January 20, 2024.

The DCI stated that upon being stopped by the police, the driver of the tuk-tuk fled the scene, leaving his passenger and the bags containing the bhang inside the three-wheeler.

“Surprisingly, the driver abandoned the tuk-tuk and fled the scene, leaving behind a passenger and four bags. The officers promptly escorted the tuk-tuk, passenger, and luggage to the Ferry Police Station for further investigation,” DCI added.

“Upon interrogation, the passenger, identified as 35-year-old Betty Valley Sangara, admitted to being the owner of the bags. A search of her luggage unearthed 909 rolls of bhang, weighing a total of 71 kilograms.”

The person of interes is currently undergoing processing pending arraignment.
