Grace Njoki, a 61-year-old patient arrested on Thursday for allegedly causing a disturbance at the Ministry of Health offices, has been released on Sh10,000 cash bail.
Njoki was arrested at Ladnan Hospital in Eastleigh, Nairobi, on Thursday evening and taken to Capitol Hill Police Station.
She was released Friday morning after police failed to present her in court.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had initially announced plans to charge Njoki with causing a public disturbance.
Speaking after her release, Njoki recounted the ordeal, stating that police officers stormed the hospital where she was undergoing treatment and informed her of her arrest without providing details.
“I was applying for a knee surgery operation when the police arrived. I feared I was being abducted,” she said.
Njoki revealed that she was taken to three police stations before being booked at Capitol Hill Police Station. She also claimed that the officers used abusive language during the arrest.
“They insulted me, saying my dreadlocks and boots made me look like a member of Mungiki. It felt like an attempt to intimidate me, but I kept screaming.”
Her lawyer, Johnstone Daniel Jr., criticised the police for failing to follow proper procedures. He said the officers cited ongoing investigations and instructed Njoki to appear in court on Friday, February 7.
