Wetang’ula joins Muturi in calling for an end to abductions

The National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has joined Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi in condemning the rising cases of abduction and death in the country.

Speaking during the handover ceremony of the newly completed tuition block at St Stephen Namasoli Secondary School in Khwisero Constituency, Kakamega County, Wetang’ula called on all the law enforcement agencies to act with speed and solve the abduction incidents.

“The office of the DCI, Office of DPP and internal security organs to investigate thoroughly and come to the root cause of who is kidnapping people and later they are found dead,” Wetang’ula said.

“The police say they are not the ones doing it. We want them to investigate and tell Kenyans who are these criminal elements in our midst who are unlawfully arresting people, causing their disappearance and eventually they are found dead.”

Ruto promised no abduction

Wetang’ula also remarked that the current administration campaigned on the promise of bringing an end to abductions, enforced disappearances and extra-judicial killings and that the recent spate of Abductions was tarnishing the government.

“We shudder to get back to any situation yenye tulikuwa tunapata miili katika River Yala na kwingine. Serikali ya Kenya-Kwanza iliahidi na inazingatia respect for human rights. So, IG, DCI and ODPP, lazima mfanye uchunguzi wa kina na kwa haraka iwezekanavyo ili tukomeshe hii mambo ambayo inaleta jina mbaya kwa nchi yetu,” Wetangula noted.

His remarks come just hours after Muturi called out the state for failing to offer answers to the rising cases of abductions and death of young people in the country.

Muturi, while speaking to journalists at the Nairobi Funeral Home, voiced concerns at the alarming rate of the disappearance of young people in the country only to turn up dead.

“The buck stops with you, Mr President; Because you are the president of Kenya, and commander in chief of the defence forces therefore I am calling upon the President to take immediate action to end these abductions, as promised,” Muturi said.

Commission of inquiry

“There must also be an open inquiry into the killings to uncover how these atrocities have been happening. We cannot allow this to become normal.”

The CS, whose son was previously abducted and later released, observed that the government should form a commission of inquiry to determine the root cause of the abductions. He equally observed that this was a grave matter which should be done with urgency.

“I am calling upon the President to order an immediate end to these abductions and killings. You promised Kenyans that this would never happen. We must establish an open inquiry to examine how these things have been happening. We cannot normalize this,” Muturi said.

“This matter is so serious that we must shelve all other priorities and focus on it. During campaigns, we promised that extra-judicial killings and abductions would not happen, yet they are now happening, and we are trying to normalize them.”
