Miles Teller has revealed the precious family heirloom he was able to save before his and wife Keleigh Teller’s home burned down due to the recent California wildfires.
“You grab very little [while evacuating],” Miles, 37, said during an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday, February 4. “[My wife and I] never thought [the fire] was going to come where we were, it’s very residential… We weren’t surrounded by any brush or anything.”
The Top Gun: Maverick star confirmed in January that his and Keleigh’s home was lost in the devastating Palisades Fire, which killed 12 people and burned more than 23,000 acres.
When Stephen Colbert asked how he and his wife were coping, Miles acknowledged that it’s a “day-by-day” process coming to terms with the loss of their residence.
The actor shared that he was able to save his late grandfather’s watch and decided to wear it for his Late Show appearance. He noted that his grandfather had died very recently, so it was especially important for him to preserve the priceless heirloom.
As he reflected on the evacuation process, Miles pointed out that there were only “90 minutes to 2 hours” between the time the fire started and when he was forced to evacuate.
“Fire is scary,” he added. “I grew up on the East Coast and hurricanes, a lot of the time, in Florida, usually a lot of the time, they’re kind of scaring you for like a week. You have a heads up. But the fire, man, it moved fast.”
Miles and his wife witnessed “pretty chaotic” scenes during the evacuation process, he said, including seeing parents grabbing their children to run away from the approaching flames.
Earlier this week, Miles told E! News that “many people” reached out to him and Keleigh to offer a place to stay in the wake of the wildfires.
“I’m a Deadhead, and so I’ve had a lot of people reach out to Keleigh like, ‘I want to send Miles a Grateful Dead shirt,’” he said. “Little stuff just means a lot, so it’s been very heartwarming.”
Many other celebrities were impacted by the California wildfires last month, with Adam Brody and Leighton Meester, Paris Hilton, Anna Faris and Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt among those who lost homes in the blaze.
When speaking to People, Miles said that he’s looking forward to a temporary distraction later this week when his favorite NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles, compete in the 2025 Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Teller family will be on opposing sides from Taylor Swift, who will be cheering on her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, during the game on Sunday, February 9.
“Thankfully, when I was at the Chiefs’ last Super Bowl, they weren’t playing the Eagles,” Miles told People on Tuesday, before vowing: “I’m going to be in a sea of green [this year].”
Miles is a lifelong fan of the Eagles, having spent his early childhood just 30 miles away from Philadelphia in Downingtown, Pennsylvania.
