Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter Emmy Russell and her boyfriend, Tyler Ward, have welcomed their first baby.
“We got to the hospital Wednesday evening when Emmy’s water broke, gave birth Friday morning at 2:30 a.m. and it was a really, really tough situation,” Ward, 40, said in a Sunday, February 2, Instagram video. “She’s still here in the hospital. We almost got discharged, and then this.”
Ward then panned the camera toward Russell, 26, who explained that she felt “woozy” and nearly fainted.
“They told me that I lost a liter of blood and I’m gonna have to get a blood transfusion,” Russell explained. “So, we’re going to text again and see if I have to get more blood. It’s gonna be worth it.”
Russell was discharged four days later on Wednesday, February 5, after receiving a transfusion.
“I feel so much better,” the American Idol alum said in a Wednesday update video. “[I’m] still pretty weak today, but I had to get two full bags of blood. I lost 1.6 liters, so more than a liter and they didn’t catch it [right away].”
She added, “I was there every day for a week and I’ve been missing out on holding the baby and holding her. I’ve been having mental breakdowns, like, every five seconds [from] trying to breast-feed and it just really being hard ‘cause I did not have any energy and the guilt that comes with it.”
Russell further praised Ward for taking charge of their daughter’s care while she recovered.
“He’s such a trooper,” Russell said. “Like, literally since I’ve had the blood transfusion before I even knew I was dying, he has changed every diaper, fed her when I couldn’t feed her. He’s literally so hands-on, but I’d like for him to have some time to himself.”
Ward, for his part, joked that he “would like to make some music one day” once Russell feels well enough to share the parenting load.
Russell is also grateful for all the well wishes surrounding her difficult childbirth experience.
“Never knew how real this struggle could be,” she captioned her upload. “Thank you all for your prayers ❤️❤️, seriously!! Ps. Thank you for all the diaper changes bubbas @tylerwardmusic.”
Russell announced in December 2024 that she and Ward were expecting their first baby.
“Y’all, me and Tyler are expecting a baby girl,” Russell said during a taping of the “Got it From My Momma” podcast. “I’m so excited. Right out of American Idol, I didn’t know. So, that’s kind of been the journey. I’m so excited and looking forward to it.”
