Uhuru to address press on DRC conflict


Former President Uhuru Kenyatta is today expected to issue a press briefing to give an update on the EAC-led Nairobi Peace Process on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) conflict.

The event will be held at Kenyatta’s office at Dennis Pritt Road in Nairobi from 9 am. 

“The Office of the 4th President of the Republic of Kenya and Facilitator of the EAC-Led Nairobi Peace Process cordially invites members of the press to a briefing on the Update of the Nairobi Peace Process,” a press invite shared by the Office of the 4th President reads in parts.

Launched in April 2022, the EAC-Led Nairobi Peace Process is a regional peace drive established to resolve conflict in the Eastern DRC.

Former President Kenyatta was appointed as the facilitator of peace talks in the drive in August 2022. 

Since his appointment, the former Head of State has facilitated several peace negotiation meetings between the DRC government and he M23 rebel group. 

Joint summit

Kenyatta’s press briefing comes ahead of a joint summit of EAC and SADC which will be co-chaired by President William Ruto and Zimbabwe’s Emmerson Mnangagwa. 

The meeting scheduled for Saturday, February 10, 2025, will be held in Tanzania.

DRC’s President Felix Tshisekedi and Rwanda’s Paul Kagame have confirmed attendance. 

South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni and Somalia’s Hassan Sheikh have also confirmed participation.
