Democratic Action Party – Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka have joined the Ismaili community in Kenya to mourn the passing of His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV.
Taking to his X account on Friday, February 7, 2025, Wamalwa expressed his grief, describing Aga Khan as a great friend of Kenya and a global icon whose contributions to humanity, particularly in the health and education sectors, were unmatched.
“Joined the Ismaili Community with my brother @skmusyoka this evening in mourning the passing of His Highness the Aga Khan, who was a great friend of Kenya and a global leader that made unmatched contributions in the betterment of humanity, particularly in the health and education sectors. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Wamalwa posted.
Wamalwa also shared photos of himself and Musyoka being warmly received by the Ismaili community, engaging in solemn moments with community members, and signing the condolence book in honour of the late spiritual leader.
Kenyan leaders condolences
The two leaders are among a trove of Kenyan dignitaries who have expressed their sympathies following the passing of Aga Khan IV.
Of the latest is Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign & Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi, who visited the community on February 6, 2025.
Mudavadi was received by Vice President Ashif Kassam, alongside members of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community, close friends, and leaders from the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
He paid tribute to the late Aga Khan IV, hailing him as having been a visionary leader who was dedicated to social and economic development through the Aga Khan Development Network.
“I joined the Aga Khan Council for Kenya, led by Vice President Ashif Kassam, along with friends and members of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community, to express my condolences on the passing of Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV in Lisbon, Portugal, at the age of 88,” Mudavadi wrote in a statement on his X account.
Aga Khan’s death
Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, in Lisbon, Portugal, at the age of 88, after nearly seven decades as the spiritual leader of the global Ismaili Muslim community.
According to a statement from the Ismaili Imamat, a funeral ceremony will be held at the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon on Saturday, attended by leaders of the community, members of the Portuguese government, and foreign dignitaries.
His burial will take place in Aswan, Egypt, on Sunday in a private ceremony.
Renowned for his philanthropic work and wealth, Aga Khan IV played a pivotal role in global development, steering initiatives in health, education, and economic empowerment through the Aga Khan Development Network.
Following his passing, his son, Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini, was named the 50th hereditary Imam of the Ismaili Muslim community, as per his father’s will.
