Prepare to see Seal like never before — as an actual seal.
The English singer, whose real name is Seal Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel, transformed into the marine mammal for Mountain Dew’s new commercial, set to air during Super Bowl LIX. The ad is part of the beverage’s Kiss From a Lime campaign to promote the tropical lime flavor of Mountain Dew Baja Blast.
Seal, 61, spoke to Us Weekly exclusively about the commercial, which includes him serenading singer Becky G with his song “Kiss From a Rose,” rewritten with Mountain-Dew-themed lyrics and dubbed “Kiss From a Lime.”
“It wasn’t a difficult transition,” he said of becoming a seal. “It is not the first time I’ve heard that joke, but it was fun. As long as it makes people laugh and makes me laugh.”
The Grammy winner also loved altering the lyrics of his iconic song for the commercial. “My brother from another mother, Patrick, he reveled at the idea of changing the lyrics because that’s what he likes to do,” Seal added. “He likes to humiliate me and so that was fun. But look, I’m in the fortunate position of having a song that most people know in some capacity or other.”
In the commercial, Becky G takes a sip of tropical-lime-flavored Mountain Dew Baja Blast and is immediately transported to Baja Beach, where she lands in a speedboat. The boat carries her toward a rock where Seal, transformed into a seal, sits on top, singing the song parody.

“It was fun, and I like and drink Mountain Dew Baja Blast, and therefore it seemed like a no-brainer,” he continued. “Again, it’s all done with a touch of humor. It’s meant to be entertainment. It’s meant to be funny. It gives me a chance to poke fun at myself. And laughter is a valuable commodity these days.”
Seal released the original “Kiss From a Rose,” in 1994 and it topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1995. Thirty years later, it’s arguably his best-known song, but originally, the singer didn’t want to release it at all. He wrote the song in 1987 but didn’t “particularly like it,” so he kept it off his debut album in 1991.
“I just wouldn’t play it to anyone,” he said.
Seal himself won’t be home to see “Kiss From a Lime” premiere during the Super Bowl. He plans to be at the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans, but with his San Francisco 49ers not participating, he doesn’t care who wins.
“I’ll be rooting for a great game,” he said. “I just want to see a great game, which fortunately they have been in recent years. They’ve been really great games. I was crushed last year when my 49ers didn’t win.”
