Sonja Morgan’s ex-husband, John Adams Morgan, died in early February. He was 94.
Sonja, 61, and John’s only child, daughter Quincy Adams Morgan, confirmed his passing via her Instagram Story on Friday, February 7.
“I want to take the opportunity to tell you all myself that my father passed away this month,” Quincy shared, noting, “My family is navigating this together.”
The 24-year-old revealed, “I very much loved and admired my dad. I am so grateful for the love and care I have been shown in these past weeks.”
Quincy noted that she “took a break from work to navigate this loss” and was grateful to her manager for reconfiguring her schedule so she could be “present with my family.”
One day prior, an obituary for John was published by The New York Times. “The trustees, fellows, and staff of the Morgan Library & Museum mourn the passing of John Adams Morgan, a devoted trustee of the Morgan for over 34 years and longtime member of its Finance Committee,” the piece read on Thursday, February 6. “Mr. Morgan’s close familial ties with the Morgan reached back to his great-grandfather J. Pierpont Morgan, whose remarkable collection forms the foundation of the institution.”

The organization continued: “John’s unwavering dedication to the Morgan’s mission to celebrate and share the history and process of human creativity will not be forgotten. We extend our deepest sympathies to Connie Morgan and all the members of the Morgan family.”
John comes from a long, historic line of influential men. He was a descendant of U.S. presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams as well as Charles Francis Adams III, who was the U.S. Secretary of the Navy under President Herbert Hoover. (All these connections are from his mother’s side of the family.)
His father, Henry Sturgis Morgan, was the cofounder of Morgan Stanley and his great-grandfather J.P. Morgan founded J.P. Morgan & Co.
John, meanwhile, competed at the 1952 Olympics where he won a gold medal in the six meter class sailing race. The following year, he graduated from Yale University. He went on to create his own investment banking firm, Morgan Joseph, which eventually merged with Tri-Artisan.
The late banker was married five times. He wed Elizabeth Robbins Choate in 1953 and the couple welcomed a son, John Adams Morgan Jr., before divorcing in 1957.
John married Tania Goss in 1962. The pair, who share son Chauncey Goss Morgan, eventually parted ways in 1966. John then wed Anne Chute in 1992, but the couple separated by the late 1990s when he met Sonja.
The Real Housewives of New York City alum tied the knot with John in 1998. They welcomed their daughter, Quincy, in 2000. Six years later, Sonja and John divorced.
John married for a fifth time in 2010 when he and Connie Morgan walked down the aisle. They were still together at the time of his death.
During her time on RHONY, Sonja wasn’t still married to John, but she gave fans a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle she was afforded because of their union. Last year, the reality star revealed she finally sold her glamorous Manhattan townhouse on the Upper East Side, which she and John purchased for $9.1 million in 1998.
The property was put up for auction in May 2024, selling to the highest bidder for $4.45 million.
“In addition to raising my daughter here, we entertained heads of state, royalty, luminaries and Fortune 500 CEOs,” Sonja said in an April 2024 statement, per the New York Post. “Many memories were made over the years, including hosting my daughter’s friends from boarding school and university, and so many noteworthy moments were filmed by NBC for Bravo and Peacock TV.”
When Quincy confirmed John’s death, Sonja was in the Big Apple attending a fashion show during New York Fashion Week, according to her Instagram. She has not yet publicly commented on John’s death.
