Former CJ Maraga engages with youth in Kibera amidst pressure to vie for presidency in 2027

Former Chief Justice David Maraga David Maraga on Sunday, February 9, 2025, engaged with the youth in Kibera, Nairobi, as pressure to have him come out of retirement and vie for 2027 presidency continues to grow.

Maraga in a statement shared via his official X account said that the young people had invited him to the ACK Holy Trinity Church in Kibrafor their Youth Service.

Maraga who is a staunch believer of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church noted that he had attended the Sunday service as part of his ongoing engagement with the youth.

“As part of my ongoing engagement with the youth, the young people invited me to the ACK Holy Trinity Church, in Kibra, Nairobi, for their “Youth Service” today,” the former CJ wrote on X.

Maraga on Kenyan youth

After the service, Maraga says he had a chance to engage some of the youth and that he was impressed and encouraged by their enthusiasm and belief in the possibility of new Kenya that will address their concerns.

“The service was presided over by the Church Vicar, Barack Oduor, whose sermon was on Moses’ leadership of the Children of Israel out of Egypt. After the service I had a chance to engage some of the youth and was impressed and encouraged by their enthusiasm and belief in the possibility of new Kenya that will address their concerns,” Maraga stated.

Pressure mounts on Maraga

A section of political leaders, lawyers and Kenyans have been pushing for a Maraga presidency in 2027, as they believe he will be the ideal competitor of President William Ruto.

Last month, Saboti Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi threw his weight behind Maraga for presidency.

In a statement shared via his official X account on Saturday, February 1, 2025, MP Amisi urged Kenyans to get the former CJ out of retirement, mobilize resources and campaign for him.

This, according to the lawmaker, is the key step to transforming the country.

He went on to state that Maraga is the ideal candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 polls.

“If Kenyans are looking for a new start, get @dkmaraga out of retirement, mobilise resources, and campaign for him. The rest are usual political dinosaurs or representatives/scions of bourgeois status quo. They will not sell against Ruto. It must be real and believable. Renaissance!” he wrote.

There have been similar calls from former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Nelson Havi who has been saying that either Maraga or his predecessor Willy Mutunga should come out of their retirement and declare their interest for the 2027 presidency.

However, Maraga has not publicly declared his interest for the 2027 presidency.

Apart from Maraga, other notable names that might compete with President Ruto for the top job include former Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua and Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah.
