Raila Odinga is one of the leading contenders for the prestigious AUC Chairperson role. He will be competing against Djibouti’s Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato. The elections are set to take place in mid-February 2025.
The former Prime Minister has toured various African nations to present his vision for the continent to Heads of State and government leaders
AUC election dates
According to the African Union (AU), the election process will be conducted in two phases. First, the Executive Council will elect and appoint Commissioners during their session on February 12-13, 2025.
Following this, the Assembly of Heads of State and Government will elect and appoint the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson during their session on February 15-16, 2025.
The AU outlined the voting procedure on its official X account, explaining that voting will continue until one of the candidates secures a two-thirds majority. Initially, all candidates will be on the ballot. Voting will be conducted up to three times. If no candidate garners the required two-thirds majority after the third round, the next ballot will be restricted to the two candidates with the highest number of votes, while the candidate with fewer votes will be withdrawn.
In cases where only two candidates are in the race and neither achieves the two-thirds majority after the third ballot, the candidate with fewer votes will be eliminated. The remaining candidate will then proceed to the next round. If the sole candidate still fails to secure the two-thirds majority, the Chairperson is required to suspend the election.
Where only one candidate is initially presented and fails to attain the two-thirds majority after three rounds, the current Chairperson must also suspend the election.
