Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Monday, February 10, 2025, graced the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) women’s prayer at the Bomas of Kenya for his African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson bid whose elections are set for Saturday, February 15, 2025.
Odinga who is a frontrunner for the continental seat, will battle it out with Djibouti’s foreign minister Mahmoud Youssouf and Madagascar’s former foreign minister Richard Randriamandrato.
At the prayer session, Odinga arrived accompanied by Ida Odinga and a host of leaders including Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja, Homa Bay governor Gladys Wanga, Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi and nominated senator Hamida Kibwana among other leaders.
Kakamega prayers
The meeting comes after a Kakamega church hosted a prayer session for Odinga on Sunday, February 9, 2025, ahead of today’s event.
The prayers were graced by ODM party’s top leadership including national chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, ODM Deputy Party Leader and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and Lurambi MP Titus Khamala.

“Earlier today, a special prayer for Raila Odinga at a Church in Kakamega town. Thank Prophet Ken Baraza for the prayers,” ODM stated on Sunday, February 9, 2025.
AU election programme
The African Union on January 27, 2025, revealed that the 2025 elections would be conducted in two phases.
The AU Executive Council, comprising foreign ministers from member states, will elect and appoint the commissioners who will oversee various portfolios within the AU Commission in the first phase which will take place between February 12-13, 2025.
However, in the second phase, candidates vying for top leadership positions including AUC chairperson and deputy chairpersons will be voted.
“The elections of the African Union Commission will be conducted as follows: The Executive Council elects and appoints the commissioners during their session on 12-13 February 2025.
“The Assembly of Heads of State and Government elects and appoints the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson during their session on 15-16 February 2025, “AUC announced.
Odinga on Saturday, February 8, 2025, exuded confidence in winning the seats following months of traversing the continent to drum up support for his candidacy.
“We have travelled the whole of Africa, met leaders and talked to them about our vision for our continent, Africa for Africa, which is my agenda and I am confident I will be elected AUC chairman,” Raila stated.
