
Speaker Wetang’ula leads parliamentary delegation to mourn Baringo Senator William Cheptumo

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has led a delegation of Members of Parliament in paying their respects to the late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo at his residence.
Cheptumo, who was 57 years old, passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2025, while undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness at a hospital in Nairobi.
In a statement on his X account on February 20, 2025, Wetang’ula remembered Cheptumo as a respected legislator, who served Parliament for three terms and played a key role in shaping Kenya’s legal framework.
“Earlier today, on behalf of the Parliamentary Service Commission and the National Assembly, I led a delegation of Members of Parliament to the home of the late Baringo Senator, Hon. William Cheptumo, to offer our heartfelt condolences to his family,” Wetang’ula stated.

The Speaker further hailed Cheptumo’s contributions in the Delegated Legislation and Justice and Legal Affairs Committees (JLAC).
“With his deep legal expertise, he diligently reviewed legislative proposals, as he chaired and guided his colleagues in the Delegated Legislation and Justice and Legal Affairs (JLAC) Committees to ensure laws served the best interests of all Kenyans,” he added.

Wetang’ula described Cheptumo as a dedicated leader whose commitment to public service was evident throughout his career.
“I fondly remember working with Senator Cheptumo in the office of Kenya’s third President, the late Mwai Kibaki. His contributions to the drafting of the 2010 Constitution left a lasting impact, reflecting his passion for justice and good governance,” Wetang’ula said.
He also announced that the late senator will be laid to rest at his home in Baringo County on March 1, 2025.

“Though his passing leaves us with heavy hearts, we take comfort in knowing that he lived a life of purpose and service. Senator Cheptumo will be laid to rest on 1st March 2025 at his home in Baringo County,” the statement concluded.
Leaders pay tribute
In his condolence message shared via his official X account, on February 16, 2025, President William Ruto mourned the departed Senator as a progressive leader dedicated to public service.
“Senator William Cheptumo was a progressive leader who was dedicated to public service. He was vocal, hardworking and a tireless champion for the transformation of Baringo,” Ruto said.
Former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi described Cheptumo as an honest, affable, and dependable leader.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Baringo Senator Hon. William Cheptumo. Hon. Cheptumo was an honest, dependable and affable person and leader,” he said.
Cheptumo’s career
Cheptumo took over as Baringo Senator in 2022 after winning the position under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
Prior to that, he served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Baringo North Constituency for 15 years, having won the seat in 2008.

During the same period, the late senator also served as an executive at the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, following his appointment.
Additionally, he held positions in various organizations, including the Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation (ICDC) and the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).
