A family from Kisii is mourning the tragic loss of their son, Daniel Amaya, a second-year student at the University of Embu, whose body was found in a dam within the institution.

A postmortem conducted on Monday, February 24, 2025, at Embu Level 5 Hospital Mortuary confirmed that Amaya died by drowning.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Josphat Change Amaya said they received news last Wednesday that Daniel was missing, prompting them to travel from Kisii to Embu in search of him.

Hospital and mortuary search

They combed through hospitals and mortuaries, hoping to find him, but their efforts were fruitless.

On Saturday, February 22, they were informed that a body had been spotted floating in a dam inside the university compound. Upon arrival, they confirmed it was Daniel.

“What we have been told by the doctor is that he died due to drowning, and we want the relevant authorities to dig deep and know the circumstances under which he found himself in a dam so that we can have justice,” Josphat Amaya, the deceased’s brother, said.

Journalists barred

Journalists covering the postmortem were, however, barred from obtaining further details as detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), who were overseeing the process, ordered them to leave.

After the autopsy, the journalists sought clarification on the findings from the doctor who conducted the procedure but were told he had already left the premises.

The family is now urging authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding their son’s death and how he died in a dam.

They are demanding answers on how Daniel ended up in the dam, saying they deserve to know the truth.
