Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has downplayed claims that he is desperate to become Kenya’s president, maintaining that his focus is on securing victory for the country through a patriotic and selfless team, regardless of whether he personally leads it.
Speaking during an interview with Kamba radio stations on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, Gachagua asserted that despite the ongoing political wrangles and effects of his impeachment case that were rooted in allegations of incompetence, his influence in Kenya’s political landscape remains intact.
Gachagua dismissed the impeachment saga as a minor issue that has had no impact on his political standing and argued that if the push to remove him from office had truly weakened him, then his name would not continue to dominate national conversations.
According to him, the fact that every major newspaper and political rally revolves around him is proof that his influence is undeniable.
“The impeachment case does not matter, and they are now realizing that they need me and actually respect me. Mimi naendelea na siasa yangu. Ukiangalia leo, kila gazeti linaongea kunihusu. Kila mkutano wananitaja. Kama hii impeachment ingekuwa imeniharibu, mbona kila siku wanazungumzia Rigathi Gachagua? Ni kwa sababu wanajua nina ushawishi fulani,” he declared.
Gachagua went on to express gratitude to those who continue to look up to him for leadership and direction.
He emphasized that he is currently fully immersed in strategizing for Kenya’s future, engaging in political discussions, and seeking alliances with like-minded leaders who are committed to the country’s progress.
“At the moment, I have no other work except thinking about the politics of Kenya—how we will liberate this country. Right now, my job is to travel and look for friends who will support us. And it is not a must that I become Kenya’s president. What we want is victory. With a good team of patriots—people who love this country, who are willing to sacrifice, and who won’t put business interests first—we can achieve that,” he stated.
Warning on 2027 political consequences
During the interview, Gachagua also took a swipe at President William Ruto, accusing him of looking down on certain communities, including the Kamba people.
He warned that in 2027, they would teach Ruto an unforgettable lesson at the ballot by rallying together and ensuring their votes are used strategically to demand respect.
“He sees you as people who do not matter. He despises the Kamba community. That is why we must come together and use our votes to teach him a lesson so that he stops insulting communities and their leaders. The way to do this is by uniting with others. We have a track record that shows we are truthful. The Kikuyu and the Kamba are together like salt and food,” he declared.
