Kansas City Chiefs running back Samaje Perine responded after a moment between him and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes went viral during the Super Bowl.
In the midst of the Eagles 40-22 beatdown of the Chiefs on Sunday, February 9, Mahomes, 29, was seen trying to keep spirits high while dapping up his teammates on the Chiefs’ bench.
However, in a video that circulated all over social media, Mahomes appeared to skip Perine, 29, when it was his turn, instead deciding to chum it up with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
“Lol I actually stood up to untie my pants strings, no one blamed anybody,” Perine commented on an Instagram video of the incident on Monday, February 10. “It’s not that deep.”
Perine signed a 1-year, $1.5 million contract with the Chiefs after spending the first 7 seasons of his NFL career with the Washington Redskins (now Commanders), Cincinnati Bengals, Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos.

During the AFC Championship game in January, Perine clinched the Chiefs’ victory over the Buffalo Bills with a 17-yard catch and run late in the 4th quarter, thus securing his team’s place in the Super Bowl.
Perine appeared in all 17 of Kansas City’s regular season games in 2024-2025 and all 3 of their playoff games. He had 8 rushing yards in Super Bowl LIX and was only targeted by Mahomes once.
Before Perine issued his explanation, Mahomes’ alleged actions drew some vitriolic reactions on social media.
“Wow 😮,” NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens commented on the video.
Another Super Bowl viewer wrote via X, “You deserve better Samaje Perine,” while another joked, “Mahomes must have thought Samaje Perine was a Philly DB…He overlooked them all day.”
After the game, Mahomes took responsibility for the loss when talking to members of the assembled media.
“They played better than us from start to finish,” Mahomes told reporters. “We didn’t start how we wanted to. The turnovers hurt. I take all the blame for that. Those turnovers swing the moment of the game and they capitalized on them. They scored on one and got a touchdown immediately after another. That’s 14 points I gave them. It’s hard to come back from that in the Super Bowl.”
The quarterback threw two costly interceptions in the game, including one that Eagles’ cornerback Cooper DeJean returned for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Mahomes apologized directly to the Kansas City faithful after the game, which saw the Chiefs’ quest to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls go up in smoke.
“Appreciate all the love and support from #ChiefsKingdom,” Mahomes wrote via X on Sunday. “I let y’all down today. I’ll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it. Want to give thanks to God for every opportunity he has given me. We will be back.”
