The Kansas City Chiefs’ hopes of a Super Bowl three-peat are still alive after their win over the Buffalo Bills in the 2025 AFC Championship Game on Sunday, January 26.

The Chiefs ultimately defeated the Bills at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, with a final score of 32-29. They will advance to Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday, February 9, and will play the Philadelphia Eagles after their victory over the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game earlier on Sunday.

Prior to the playoffs, the Chiefs clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC for the 2024-2025 NFL season, while the Bills trailed behind them at No. 2. During the postseason, the Chiefs defeated the Houston Texans on January 18 to advance to the championship game after earning a bye week. The Bills, meanwhile, beat the Denver Broncos and the Baltimore Ravens on January 12 and January 19, respectively, to earn their spot in the championship game against the Chiefs.

Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen have been rivals ever since they became quarterbacks in 2018 for the Chiefs and the Bills, respectively. Throughout their professional careers, the two have met five times in the regular season, with Allen, 28, besting Mahomes, 29, four to one. However, in the playoffs, Allen has yet to defeat Mahomes, with a 0-3 record prior to Sunday’s game. The Chiefs previously beat the Bills in the 2021 AFC Championship Game and the 2022 and 2024 divisional playoff games.

While Allen has yet to make it to a Super Bowl with the Bills, Mahomes has won three titles with the Chiefs. After his first victory in 2020, Mahomes became a back-to-back Super Bowl champion when he bested the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023 and the San Francisco 49ers in 2024.

Ever since Super Bowl LVIII last February, the Chiefs have been vocal about their desire to achieve a three-peat, which would make them the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive titles.

“Next year in New Orleans, we’re gonna do it again,” Mahomes said on the “Impaulsive With Logan Paul” podcast in May 2024. “I’m putting it on the table. We’re gonna do it again. I’m telling you now.”

As for Allen, he emphasized his own Super Bowl dream in a 2024 press conference, telling reporters of his plans for this season, “There’s one job to get done and that’s win a Super Bowl.”
