Global music sensation Chris Brown has taken legal action against production companies Ample, LLC and Warner Brothers, filing a $500 million (Ksh64 billion) lawsuit in the Superior Court of Los Angeles.
The suit stems from the release of the documentary ‘Chris Brown: A History of Violence,’ which Brown says is riddled with false and defamatory claims designed to tarnish his reputation for financial gain.
The lawsuit, filed by attorneys Levi G. McCathern, II and Evan Selik from McCathern, Shokouhi, Evans, states that the defendants of knowingly promoted a misleading narrative, ignoring credible evidence, and disregarding ethical journalism.
According to the lawyers, the documentary, released on October 27, 2024, reportedly sensationalized allegations of sexual assault and evidence tampering against Brown—claims that have previously been discredited in court.
In a strongly worded statement, the ‘Angel Numbers’ hitmaker’s legal team emphasized that their client has never been found guilty of any sexual crimes.
Central to the documentary is testimony from Daisia Chantel Frank, referred to as “Jane Doe.” Lawyers say that according to court records, Frank’s allegations were dismissed as baseless years ago.
Chris Brown’s evidence
Evidence presented by Brown includes text and voice messages showing Frank actively pursued a relationship with him, affirming that their interactions were consensual.
The lawsuit states that despite being provided with this evidence before the film’s release, the producers chose to elevate Frank’s discredited claims.
Brown’s attorneys argue that this decision prioritized profit over truth, recklessly damaging their client’s reputation and undermining the credibility of genuine survivors of intimate partner violence.
“This case is about protecting the truth,” Levi McCathern, Brown’s attorney stated.
“Despite being presented with evidence disproving their claims, the producers of this documentary intentionally promoted false and defamatory information, knowingly disregarding their ethical obligations as journalists. Their actions not only undermine Mr. Brown’s decade-long efforts to rebuild his life but also disrespect true survivors of violence.”
The lawsuit seeks $500 million in damages, a portion of which Brown has pledged to donate to survivors of sexual abuse.
This is not the first time Brown has opened his life to public scrutiny. His 2017 documentary Chris Brown: Welcome to My Life remains a definitive account of his struggles, growth, and resilience.
His legal team stated that the new documentary distorts the artist’s journey and disregards the truth established in prior legal proceedings.
