Christy Carlson Romano is on the mend after she was apparently shot in the eye while attempting to celebrate her husband’s birthday.
Romano, 40, recounted in a video shared via Instagram that she had been shot in the eye on Friday, February 7, while shooting clay pigeons in Texas as part of husband Brendan Rooney’s birthday celebrations.
“So I got shot in the eye. It was not fun,” the actress said, showing off where the bullet had struck her in the eye, resulting in significant bruising. While Romano noted that she is now “safe,” she also revealed that fragments of the bullet were still stuck in both her eye and her forehead.
“I’m very grateful to first responders as a whole,” she continued in the video. “I mean, they’re just the most amazing superhero-like people to take care of us at our most desperate times.” She also gave a shout out to the hospital St. David’s Health in Austin.
“This is really bad tonight,” Romano continued, gesturing to her face. “Everything’s kind of clearing out. But, I get to say I got shot in the face and lived to tell the tale.” She concluded, “Be grateful for every day.”
In her caption, Romano explained that her birthday “present” to husband Rooney was to shoot clay pigeons together. “There was another party with us and they unsafely fired in the wrong direction and shot me in the face,” she wrote, noting that Rooney “immediately sprung into action, assessed me, and rushed me to the hospital” after she had been shot.
“I was hit in 5 places, one was less than an inch from hitting me directly in my right eye,” Romano’s caption continued. “Unfortunately a fragment got lodged behind my eye and it is too risky to remove surgically at this time. Doctors will continue to monitor me (I can see normally at the moment).”
She continued, “With everything that happened, all I can think about is how grateful I am to be alive. I love my daughters, husband, family, and friends so much. I saw my life flash before my eyes and I’m telling you, hug the people around you every chance you can. Life can change in an instant. 🙏.”
Several people flocked to the post’s comments section to offer Romano their well-wishes. Actress Candace Cameron Bure commented, “Whoa- I’m so sorry this happened! So scary and glad you’re safe ❤️🩹,” while Bachelor in Paradise alum Jade Roper Tolbert wrote, “Oh my goodness!! I’m so glad you are safe. How scary. ❤️”
Rooney, for his part, commented on his wife’s social media post to commend her bravery throughout the ordeal. “You are the bravest, toughest, most stoic and badass woman I have ever met. I am so thankful you are alive,” the film producer wrote. “I am so thankful you are the mother to our children. I wouldn’t know what to do without you. I love you more than life itself. 🙏.”
