Commentator 254 puts his ‘Weekend Warm Up’ show on hold

Kenyan YouTuber and digital content creator Brian Mutinda, popularly known as Commentator 254, has announced that he is halting the production and filming of his widely followed YouTube show, The Weekend Warm-Up, as financial challenges have pushed him to the edge.

Commentator took to his Instagram page on Wednesday, January 5, 2025, with a heartfelt post, expressing his distress over having to break such disappointing news to his fans, but emphasizing that he had no other choice.

He revealed that the entire ordeal was weighing heavily on him and that his mental health had started to deteriorate as everything unfolded like a scene straight out of a movie.

“Update. Hey guys, here with some rather unfortunate news. This isn’t easy for me to say because I never wanted to come on social media and deliver such disappointing news, but sometimes, one’s mental health matters more than anything else,” he shared.

Weeks of Shooting

Commentator, who stressed that his decision was driven by his love for his family and a desire to protect his mental well-being, explained that the move came after weeks of back-to-back shooting.

He noted that they had been left with no option but to pause production after completely depleting their financial resources, admitting that he was uncertain about what the future held after this hiatus.

The YouTuber then elaborated on the financial strain, explaining that the costs had become unmanageable since he had to hire high-end equipment, including professional cameras, for every shoot—an expense that had proven unsustainable.

“It wouldn’t be fair for me not to explain why, so here it goes. Producing a live show requires a full crew, as well as renting equipment that you don’t personally own—especially high-quality cameras. That budget has been running me into the ground, but I chose to push through, believing that one day, it will pay off. Even in business, sacrifices must be made first,” he explained.

Reason for hiatus

Commentator went on to clarify his situation, acknowledging that many people might ridicule him for publicly admitting to financial struggles, but he insisted he was simply being transparent.

He pointed out that the challenges were real, revealing that he often had to personally cover the Uber costs of some of his guests, as many found it difficult to afford transportation to Two Rivers Mall, where he had been hosting the show.

“The location has also been a challenge for many guests because not every Kenyan can afford an Uber to Two Rivers. So at times, I had to pay for some of them out of pocket. I’m sharing my story knowing full well that people will laugh at me, and others will have negative things to say,” he stated.

Returning to YouTube

The digital content creator then assured his fans that he was now shifting his focus back to producing YouTube news content—the type of content that first put him on the map.

He cautioned his critics against twisting his words to suggest that he was giving up on his dreams, emphasizing that he was simply facing a temporary setback and remained hopeful that God would open new doors for him.

“I will, however, redirect my full focus back to my channel for news updates, because that’s what you all know me best for,” he concluded.
