Cosmas Ombori, better known by his online moniker Cosmos Choy, has resigned from his job at a US-based trucking company to run for Embakasi East parliamentary seat in the 2027 general election.

Choy, an outspoken and polarizing figure on social media, is seeking to replace incumbent Embakasi East MP Babu Owino whom he has strongly embraced in recent days.

In a post on X on Monday, February 24, 2025, Choy announced his departure from Ryder, a logistics company where he worked.

“Just resigned from this international company Ryder18 wheels 🛞, I am running for MP Embakasi East 2027. Message approved 💯 %,” Cosmos Choy wrote on X on Monday,” he wrote, punctuating the statement with his signature directness.

Choy’s candidacy pits him against the backdrop of shifting political allegiances.

Babu Owino has declared his intention to contest the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, leaving the Embakasi East seat open.

Choy has publicly endorsed Babu’s gubernatorial bid, stating on February 11: “My Governor, My choice. Sakaja home 🏡 direct. I @cosmochoy Kipchumba mwenyewe approves this message 💯.”

The endorsement marks a curious alliance given Choy’s history of unpredictable political positions.

A former supporter of opposition leader Raila Odinga during Kenya’s 2017 elections, Choy switched allegiances to back President William Ruto in 2022.

He has since emerged as a vocal advocate for the Ruto administration, frequently using his platform to lambast the president’s critics.

Choy’s shift was evident earlier this month when he criticized Raila for endorsing Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja for re-election.

“Raila endorsed Sakaja wa Madimples. Without knowing, he gave Babu Owino more popular. I @cosmochoy Kipchumba Mwenyewe approves this message 💯,” Cosmos Choy tweeted on February 11.

Despite his residence in the United States, Choy maintains a robust following in Kenya, leveraging social media to engage voters and shape discourse.

His familiarity with President Ruto extends beyond virtual exchanges.

The blogger appears to have easy access to Ruto as the two met in the US in September 2022 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly which happened shortly after the president won the August elections.

Political analysts remain divided on Choy’s prospects. Some view him as a social media sensation whose popularity may not translate into votes, while others see his unfiltered style as resonating with a disillusioned electorate seeking unconventional leadership.

Embakasi East has traditionally favoured ODM candidates with strong grassroots networks.

Whether Choy’s online influence can overcome on-the-ground realities remains to be seen.

The 2027 elections are already shaping up to be a battleground for Nairobi’s political future.

With Babu Owino eyeing City Hall and Choy staking his claim in Embakasi East, voters face choices that reflect the evolving landscape of politics where digital charisma increasingly meets electoral ambition.
