Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Friday, November 29, 2024, celebrated the birthday of their first-born son Kevin Rigathi at their home.
In a private ceremony only attended by Gachagua, his wife of 35 years Dorcas and their last-born son Keith Ikinu, the couple celebrated Kevin at their family home just days after chaos erupted during a funeral in Limuru.
“Earlier today I joined my wife Dorcas and our son Dr Keith to celebrate our firstborn’s birthday, as we thank God for the gift of life and family, as well as the prayers of many friends from all over the country and the world,” Gachagua said in a statement.
While the two sons of the former deputy president have managed to keep a low profile away from public scrutiny, Kevin is a software engineer while Keith is a medical doctor having graduated from the University of Nairobi in 2019.
The two, however, remained obscure and in the background despite their parents’ popularity and attracted public attention only during their father’s contentious removal from office by way of impeachment in October 2024.
Public limelight
On October 16, 2024, just a day before Gachagua’s impeachment, Kevin accompanied his beleaguered father to the Senate chambers to follow the proceedings of his ouster.
Gachagua’s sons were adversely mentioned during the impeachment process as they were fingered to be the figures pulling the strings in the family business.
In his own admission, Gachagua indicated that his two sons were running most of their family businesses.
On the other hand, Keith- a medical doctor who briefly practised at the Mbagathi Hospital, was a top student before joining UoN and graduating in 2019.
Gachagua son’s graduation
During his graduation, Gachagua poured his heart out, intimating that now that he had succeeded in educating his last child, he could go back to obtain a Master’s degree.
“After 30 years, I went back to the University at the graduation square this morning to witness the graduation of my last-born son, Keith Ikinu Rigathi, who was awarded Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. My wife and I were overwhelmed with excitement and indeed we are very proud parents,” Gachagua said in 2019.
Adding: “Having seen my last child through school, I will consider going back for a Master’s Degree in the same university sometime next year. I am a very proud father and I salute Doctor Ikinu Rigathi for the honour he has bestowed on his parents. As he starts working as a Doctor, I have reminded him that the profession is a calling and I am very happy he has joined me in service to mankind.”
