The government through the Ministry of Health has confirmed two additional Mpox cases, bringing a total number of 33 confirmed cases since the outbreak began.
In an update dated Friday, January 17, 2025, Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa stated that the latest cases have been reported from Kericho and Taita Taveta counties.
In addition, Barasa noted that the confirmed cases have been reported in 12 counties with Nakuru reporting the highest number of Mpox patients.
“The Ministry would like to inform the public of two (2) 2) additional confirmed Mpox cases in Kericho (1) and Taita Taveta (1) Counties. This brings the total number of confirmed cases to Thirty-Three (33) since the outbreak began.
“These cases have been reported across 12 counties as follows: Nakuru (10), Mombasa (8), Nairobi (2), Kajiado (2), Bungoma (2), Taita Taveta (2), Kericho (2), Busia (1), Makueni (1), KB (1), Kiambu (1) and Uasin Gishu (1),” Health CS’s statement reads in parts.
Meanwhile, the CS noted that since the outbreak of Mpox in the country in July, a total of 2,207,715 travellers have been screened at various Points of Entry (POE), and 225 contacts have been identified.
“A total of 225 contacts have been identified, 216 of whom have been monitored for the recommended period of 21 days. Of those, nine (9) contacts tested positive for Mpox. Additionally, over 2.9 million travellers have been screened at the Points of Entry, and suspected cases are Identified for further investigation,” she added.
Mpox measures
Furthermore, the CS in the update said that to curb the virus from spreading in the learning institution, her ministry has partnered with the Ministry of Education to enhance health measures in schools.
Additionally, risk communication and community engagement efforts are ongoing and are focused on educating the public about Mpox prevention and control measures. With the opening of schools across the Republic, we wish to re-emphasize that children are at heightened risk of severe Iliness from Mpox due to their underdeveloped Immune e systems.
The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, is enhancing school health education and other health measures in schools to prevent the spread of Mpox disease in these learning institutions.
