Jamaican reggae sensation Etana, whose real name is Shauna McKenzie, has opened up on her cordial relationship with her three children and how she has managed to juggle the busy schedule with motherhood.
Speaking to K24 TV on Thursday, December 5, 2024, the celebrated artist revealed that her motherhood journey is a tough task that requires a lot of self-discipline and dedication.
But driven by the deep love which oozes freely in her songs, Etana told K24 TV host Doreen Majala that she gives her undivided attention to her kids while at home.
Her firstborn child is 23 years old while the rest are 12 and eight.
“I have a big heart, when I love, I love deep. As much as you can hear my lyrics… when I am home, I give my children everything, all of me,” Etana stated.
The reggae superstar behind the ‘Weakness in Me’ hit song, explained that she gave birth to her firstborn child while in high school. With her young age, kept referring to him as her brother, a situation which Etana noted did not augur well with her son.
At some point, her son was forced to face off with the fans who confessed their love for his mother.
“They are 12 and 8 now and my son that I had in high school is now 23 (when he was growing up would ask if he was my brother) because I was very young and when you see us together now, people still don’t think that he is my son,” Etana said during her K24 TV interview.
“It was a little challenging for him though but because he was still young,” she added.
Etana’s daughters
Besides her 23-year-old son, Etana is also raising two daughters aged eight and 12. The reggae artist who is in the country for a concert dubbed Good Vibes Festival set to take place at the A.S.K The Dome in Nairobi on Saturday, December 7, 2024, detailed that she takes special care of her last born because of how creative she is.
“The eight-year-old loves art, a very creative spirit and a very free spirit too like me. So I feel like I have to guard her extra because I see a lot of me in her,” Etana explained.
Her 12-year-old daughter is more into music and other forms of art but she is more convinced that she wants to be a orthopaedic surgeon.
Despite her long-term career goal, Etana told K24 TV that she is more focused on supporting her to achieve and fulfil her dreams.
“My 12-year-old is like the other side of me, she is more into voice, she sings, she believes in creating little movies and doing voiceovers but she wants to be an orthopaedic surgeon,” Etana added.
The reggae artist who is set to perform at a much-anticipated concert organized by Mediamax Network Limited, is raising her kids together with her husband whom she credits for being present in their parenthood journey.
