‘It is our responsibility to be happy when Ruto is sad’ – Senator Methu

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has defended a section of Kenyans who celebrated the February 15, 2025, loss of Raila Odinga who vied for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC).
Speaking during a senate session on Thursday, February 20, 2025, Methu indicated that the people who had celebrated were happy that President William Ruto had lost because he was the face behind Odinga’s candidacy.
“Kenyans never celebrated because Raila Odinga lost. A section of Kenyans celebrated because they feel and believe that William Ruto lost that election; because it is Ruto who was fronting Raila,” Methu said.
“It is our responsibility to be very happy when Ruto is sad.”
Expressing displeasure
The senator who was dewhipped from the leadership of the environment and natural resources committee in the senate equally condemned the arrest of more than 48 youths who had heckled Ruto on February 7, 2025, during a rally in Isiolo.
Methu maintained that the young men simply expressed their displeasure with the president and that it did not warrant an arrest.
“It is common knowledge that people express their displeasure in different ways,” Methu said.

“You cannot control how people feel when you are attending a meeting or having a rally in their area. It is their responsibility to feel whatever they want to feel. If they are happy or heckle you, it is okay.”
Methu was contributing to a statement read on the floor of the house by Isiolo senator Fatuma Dullo who challenged the government to overhaul the entire security apparatus in the county following the disturbances.
Drug trafficking
Dullo pointed an accusing finger at a rapidly growing drug trafficking in the County, noting that some of the proceeds of these crimes were finding their way into funding political unrest.
The senator equally called on the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) to conduct investigations into the growing drug problem in the area. She also called on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to look into some of the local leaders involved in the trade.
“The Inspector General of Police should conduct a complete overhaul of Isiolo County police apparatus to restore law and order,” Dullo said.
“Isiolo County is also witnessing an alarming rise in drug trafficking with narcotics being sold openly in broad daylight.”
Similar remarks were echoed by Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, who called on the state to reign in on individuals involved in heckling during public rallies.
