Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has released a statement following the unfortunate incident of the brutal murder of a patient at the facility.
In a statement on Sunday, February 9, 2025, KNH acting CEO Dr William K Sigilai said that there was no evidence suggesting an outsider had entered the hospital to commit the crime.
“Let me state that at this point, we actually do not have evidence that anybody walked in and committed the said crime. We know for a fact the patient was murdered in the ward,” Sigilai said in the statement.
Acknowledging that the incident happened at the KNH ward, Sigilai stated that they have handed over the case to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI) and have since launched an internal investigation to determine the facts surrounding the incident.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the patient’s family during this difficult time. The hospital is working closely with law enforcement authorities and has launched an internal investigation to determine the facts surrounding this incident,”
“We are committed to providing the family with all the necessary support and to support ongoing investigations surrounding the incident,” Sigilai said in the statement.
Cautioning the public against speculation and interfering with investigations, Sigilai stated that the post-modern of the deceased will be conducted as directed by the DCI.
“The post-mortem examination of the deceased’s body will be conducted as directed by the DCI. We urge the public to allow the DCI to conduct its investigations without interference and to refrain from speculation that may cause further distress to the family,” he stated.

Security at KNH
He further assured members of the public that the security measures have been enhanced to ensure the safety of patients, staff and visitors at the facility and prevent such incidents in the future.
“In light of this incident, we have heightened and enhanced security measures across the hospital to ensure the safety of more than 1,800 patients, staff and all visitors.KNH has an elaborate security system in place, including CCTV cameras in common areas. Additionally, we have officers from the National Police Service stationed within the hospital, and we are close to a police post.
“We assure the public that we are taking all necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the future,” he stated.
Murdered patient
Gilbert Kinyua Muthoni was brutally murdered in Ward 7B on Friday morning, February 7, 2025.
According to the acting CEO, Kinyua was admitted to KNH having been referred from St Mary’s Hospital, Lang’ata on December 11, 2024, with nervous system disorders.
“Kinyua was referred to KNH from St. Mary’s Hospital, Lang’ata on December 11, 2024, and was admitted to Ward 7B, which specializes in the management of patients with nervous system disorders, otherwise known as neurological conditions.
“We wish to clarify that this ward is not designated for mental health conditions as has been erroneously reported in some quarters,” he added.
