Kwale Resident Magistrate Ruth Ogolla has sentenced a man to 20 years imprisonment for the offence of defilement.
According to a statement shared by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, the man was found guilty of defiling a 13-year-old girl.
His sentencing came after the prosecution, through Collins Orwa, produced six witnesses in court who testified against the accused.
The man committed the offence on December 28, 2022, in the Kombani area in Kwale County.
“He committed the offence on the 28th of December 2022 in the Kombani area in Kwale County. Kwale Resident Magistrate Ruth Ogolla ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond any reasonable doubt and sentenced the accused person accordingly,” ODPP said in the statement.

Defilement cases
The sentencing comes just a day after Malindi Principal Magistrate Joy Shiundu sentenced another man to life imprisonment for the offence of incest.
ODPP, in a statement shared via social media on Monday, December 9, 2024, said that the man (name withheld to protect minors’ identities) was sentenced after he was found guilty of committing incest with his four blood relatives aged between 12 years and three years.
Shiundu ruled that the prosecution proved its case on the charges of incest contrary to section 20(1) of the Sexual Offences Act. No. 3 of 2006 against the accused person to the required standard of proof beyond any reasonable doubt.
The convict will now serve life imprisonment for each of the four counts.
“I find that the prosecution established the victims were related to the accused person and the accused person knows that he was related to the victims,” the magistrate ruled.
Last year, another 40-year-old man was sentenced to 30 years in jail after being found guilty of incest and defilement.
Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Vincent Adet convicted and jailed the man for 30 years for committing the act of incest with his 14-year-old close relative.
