‘Mambo Mbotela was a true Kenyan trailblazer and role model’

Kenya’s former President Uhuru Kenyatta has mourned the death of veteran journalist Leonard Mambo Mbotela.

Mbotela, whose death was confirmed on Friday, February 7, 2025, has been described as a patriot and a great Kenyan by the retired president.

“Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has mourned veteran broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela, describing him as a legendary media personality whose contribution to the country’s media industry will forever be cherished by all citizens.

“The (former) Head of State said the late Mambo Mbotela, who passed on at a Nairobi hospital while undergoing treatment, will be remembered for his professionalism, patriotism, and his ever-entertaining and educative programmes, which sought to teach society values that build strong families and a great nation,” a statement posted on X on Friday, February 7, 2025, read.

Legendary voice

The fourth president of Kenya also cited Mbotela’s famous radio porgramme, ‘Je Huu ni Ungwana?,’ as an initiative that informed the public.

“Mzee Leonard Mambo Mbotela was a great Kenyan. He was a patriot who worked hard to ensure the public was well informed through his programmes especially that of ‘Je Huu Ni Ungwana?’ which was aired on the National Broadcaster KBC.

“His voice will be remembered by many at the time the country was undergoing some political challenges. He came out as an assuring voice, calming the country and giving hope to the citizens that the future is bright,” the statement added.

Mbotela’s mastery of the Swahili language was also acknowledged by the former Head of State.

“Mr. Mambo’s deep mastery of the Swahili language, proverbs, and sayings, besides his ever-smiling demeanour endeared him to many listeners, noting that his voice was distinct and reassuring.

“His commitment to ideals for a better society endeared him to many Kenyans. Despite the fame, Mambo Mbotela remained amiable and humble, interacting both with the high and mighty in society.

“He was loyal to the core, steadfast and highly committed to his profession and employer, KBC. Indeed, Mr. Leonard Mambo Mbotela was a true Kenyan trailblazer and role model who has left an indelible mark on the country’s media industry,” the statement concluded.

Mbotela died at the age of 85.
