The medics announcement comes amid increased concerns about Besigye’s condition from Kenya and beyond.
The Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye was abducted in Nairobi in November 2024.
Besigye was scheduled to attend Karua’s book launch on November 17, 2024, but he failed to appear.
Reports later emerged that he had been transported to Uganda, where he was arraigned before the General Court Martial in Kampala on November 20, 2024.
Kenya involvement
People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader and lawyer Martha Karua, who has been engaged in Besigye’s court martial proceedings in Uganda, confirmed on February 19, 2025, that she was in the process of reapplying for another special license after she was unable to fully participate in the court proceedings of the opposition leader.

Activist Boniface Mwangi, a close confidant of Karua, has also joined the clamour after video footage showed the activist in the streets protests in Kampala.
Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale and his Nairobi counterpart Edwin Sifuna called for the immediate release of the Ugandan opposition figure on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, while condemning his detention as unconstitutional and unjust.
Speaking during a Senate session on February 19, 2025, Senator Khalwale urged the Kenyan Parliament to take a firm stand on behalf of Besigye, emphasizing his long-standing contribution to democracy in Uganda.
“Let it go on record that it is the wish of the Senate of Kenya that Besigye, who has long served in Uganda in the Office of the Leader of Opposition, be set free,” Khalwale stated.
On his part, Sifuna condemned Uganda’s defiance of a Supreme Court ruling that declared Besigye’s trial unconstitutional.
“It causes me great embarrassment as a Kenyan that we handed over Kizza Besigye, who is a personal friend of mine, to the authorities in Uganda despite the fact the Supreme Court of Uganda has said that the trial is unconstitutional and should be discontinued,” Sifuna stated.
