MP Muchai murder case: Analysis uncovers communication among suspects

Stephen Mwangi, an assistant superintendent of police in charge of communication analysis, on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, revealed that there was communication among the seven accused persons in the murder of the late Kabete Member of Parliament George Muchai.
The analysis presented before Milimani High Court judge Kanyi Kimondo revealed that there was a close relationship between Jane Wanjiru and Mustafa Kimani alias Musto and that they had engaged 150 times before and after Muchai’s death.
“According to data extracted from mobile service telephone providers from a period stretching February 1, 2015, to February 11, 2015, Accused Five (Jane) and Accused Three (Mustafa) communicated 150 times,” Mwangi told the court.
According to Mwangi, who is also the data integrator, Mustafa had engaged Jane Wanjiru 43 times.
The analysis also revealed that other accused persons; Raphael Kimani Gachii alias Kim who was a butcher, and Stephen Astiva Lipapo alias Chokore collectively engaged on phone 100 times during that period.
“What I was able to deduce from the analysis was that there existed an association that was close between Accused Person Two (Raphael) and Accused Person Four (Stephen) because they both engaged each other 100 times before and after the murder of the later Muchai,” Mwangi told the court.
Additionally, it emerged that there was an association between accused person Eric Isabwa and his counterpart Raphael Kimani who had two mobile numbers of which one was used to engage Raphael most of the time.
In that period, Eric engaged Raphael 51 times while Raphael engaged Eric 58 times – the police analyst told the court.
Further, in the same period, Raphael also engaged Mustafa 14 times while Mustafa engaged Raphael five times.
There was a relationship between Eric and Stephen where Eric engaged Stephen 19 times and Stephen engaged Eric six times.
In his analysis, Mwangi also revealed another crucial information on communication between the taxi driver Morris Njuguna who engaged Mustafa 47 times while Mustafa communicated with the taxi driver 35 times within the said period.
The taxi driver was also in communication with Stephen 53 times in the same period.
Furthermore, Eric was in communication with Margaret Njeri (the Sixth Accused) 41 times while Njeri engaged Eric 32 times.
Lastly, Mwangi told the court that the analysis showed that one of the phone numbers used was traced to Simon Gichamba (the Seventh Accused Person) who stated that the line he was using had been inserted in a phone belonging to Ngatia.
The communications analysis now paints a different picture since some of the accused persons had told the court that they had not known each other until they were arrested.
