Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has opposed President William Ruto’s recent executive order abolishing the Identification Card (ID) vetting process for North Eastern region residents.
In a statement shared on his Instagram account on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Salasya criticized the move and announced his plans to challenge it in Parliament. The outspoken legislator revealed that he will propose a motion next week when the House resumes its sessions to oppose the executive directive.
“I will put up a motion in the Parliament to denounce this policy in the Parliament. The Parliament has powers to do away with this silly executive order,” Salasya stated.
Salasya expressed his determination to rally support against the policy, declaring his intention to form a strong opposition bloc within Parliament. He emphasized that this group primarily consisted of young parliamentarians.
“I am now going to form a very serious opposition in the Parliament comprising of young parliamentarians. Any youthful MP who will not support this move, I will expose them. Wacha Bunge ifunguke next week kwani Ruto anafikiria yeye ndio everything,” he added.
Ruto on ID vetting
President Ruto said that residents of Northern Kenya will now find it easier to obtain national identification documents following the signing of a Presidential Proclamation on Registration and Issuance of IDs to Border Counties.
The head of State emphasized the need for equality in the vetting process.
“If it’s about vetting, let all children of Kenya be vetted equally without any discrimination. We want the people of Northern Kenya to feel equal to the rest of the country,” he stated.
The President made these remarks on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at Orahey Grounds in Wajir Town. He highlighted that residents of North Eastern Kenya have long faced challenges such as extra-vetting and ethnic profiling when applying for birth certificates and national identity cards.
The event was attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, along with Governors Ahmed Abdullah Mohamed (Wajir), Mohamad Adan Khalif (Mandera), and Nathif Jama Adam (Garissa).
This development came as part of President Ruto’s four-day development tour of North Eastern Kenya.
