Police speak after Kenyan and Ethiopian fishermen clash in Turkana

The National Police Service has issued a statement after reports that Kenyan and Ethiopian fishermen have clashed in Turkana.

In a statement on Sunday, February 23, 2025, National Police Service Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed that police had received reports of the clashes, and that the matter was being handled by the Kenyan police in collaboration with their Ethiopian counterpart.

According to Nyaga, the clashes occurred at Lopemukat Common Waters, which lies along the Kenya-Ethiopia border.

“Earlier today, the National Police Service received information regarding an alleged clash between Turkana and Dasanach fishermen at Lopemukat Common Waters, which lies along the Kenya-Ethiopia border,” Nyaga stated.

“The Turkana County Security team, in collaboration with Ethiopian security authorities, is on the ground to verify the reports and take necessary action in accordance with the law. The National Police Service urges the affected communities to remain calm and refrain from any actions that may escalate the situation. As a Service, we remain committed to our mandate of maintaining law and order.”

Murkomen speaks

In a statement on Sunday, February 23, 2025, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen revealed that the government had deployed additional security in the area following the clashes.

“The government has deployed additional security along the Kenya-Ethiopia border following last evening’s incident involving Kenyan citizens and Dassanech community members of Ethiopia in Lopeimukat area,” he said.

Murkomen says the operation in the area is being led by the Inpector General of Police Douglas Kanja.

“The Inspector General of Police has been leading efforts to contain the situation and calm has returned to the area. We’re also engaging the Government of Ethiopia in a bid to broker peace between the two communities. We will do everything possible to keep our people safe at all times,” he added.
