In Meru County, a recent event hosted by Governor Kawira Mwangaza turned chaotic in Makiri, Igembe South Constituency. Local residents, upset about ongoing disputes, protested by disrupting the event and destroying donated items.
These protests stem from growing tensions between Governor Mwangaza and her Deputy, Isaac Mutuma, who hails from Makiri. The community felt disrespected by the event’s location. To control the situation, the police had to use tear gas to disperse the protesters.
On social media, Governor Mwangaza blamed Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi for the incident, expressing her frustration.
Mutuma, the Deputy Governor, has faced difficulties since his falling out with the Governor in April. He experienced staff changes and budget cuts, and even had power outages at his official residence, sparking rumors of his resignation.
During President Ruto’s recent visit to the region,
Governor Mwangaza accused some Meru leaders and political opponents of seeking control over the county, further intensifying political tensions.
