Raila Odinga has extended his condolences following the passing of Wafula Chebukati, the former chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Chebukati died on the evening of February 20, 2025, at the age of 63.
In a heartfelt statement, Raila offered his sympathy to Chebukati’s family, including his widow Mama Mary and their son Emmanuel.
“To the family of Mr. Wafula Chebukati who passed on earlier my condolences and sympathy for the loss of a son, father, breadwinner. Times like these are never easy, and no amount of words and solidarity can ever fill the void left,” Raila said in a statement issued by his secretariat.
“My thoughts are with the entire family during this difficult time,” he added.
Chebukati’s legacy is particularly notable for his role in overseeing two of the country’s most contentious elections, the general elections of 2017 and 2022, both of which were marred by controversy and resulted in losses for Raila.
Throughout his tenure, Chebukati faced immense political pressure and scrutiny, navigating an electoral landscape fraught with deep divisions and accusations of bias.
Despite the fierce criticisms he received, particularly from Raila’s supporters, Chebukati remained steadfast in his commitment to uphold the constitutional mandate of the IEBC.
His insistence on conducting elections in accordance with established laws, even amid political turmoil, has left a complex legacy that extends beyond the ballot box.
As news of Chebukati’s passing reverberates throughout the nation, tributes from various political figures and citizens alike highlight the significance of his contributions to the country’s electoral framework.
While opinions may differ on the efficacy of his leadership, Chebukati’s determined approach to managing the electoral process remains a point of discussion within the broader narrative of Kenya’s democracy.
Raila’s statement reflects a moment of sombre reflection, reminding Kenyans of the personal and political challenges that have come to define the country’s electoral journey.
Amid the grief over Chebukati’s death, many will undoubtedly recall how his tenure impacted electoral politics in the country, shaping the very contours of the nation’s democratic process.
In the days ahead, as conversations about Chebukati’s legacy unfold, Raila’s tribute serves as a reminder of the complexities inherent in political leadership, the weight of public service, and the enduring struggle for democracy in a nation still grappling with old rivalries and hopes for a more unified future.
