Applying for a HELB Loan: A Comprehensive Guide for Students

Applying as a First Time Applicant:

  1. Visit the HELB Website: Head over to the HELB website or hef.co.ke to access the Student Portal.
  2. Register: Click on “register” to create an account. Provide your National ID number. If you don’t have a National ID, enter your KCSE Index number.
  3. Email Confirmation: Enter a valid email address and password, then click “register.” Check your email (Inbox or Spam/Junk) to activate your account.
  4. Phone Verification: Provide a valid telephone number where a verification code will be sent. If the code expires, click resend to get a new one.
  5. Complete Profile: Fill in your biodata and give consent to the collection of your personal data.
  6. Loan Application: Fill in your personal details and submit your scholarship/loan request. Make sure to read and agree to the loan terms and conditions.
  7. Guarantor Details: Update your guarantor details, including their ID numbers and registered telephone numbers.
  8. Payment Information: Provide your loan payment information, whether it’s through a bank or mobile payment.
  9. Submit: Once all details are complete, submit your loan application.

Requirements:

  • Valid email address and telephone number (registered in your name)
  • KCPE and KCSE index numbers and year of examination
  • Passport size photo
  • Copy of your National ID
  • College/University admission letter
  • Your parents’ registered telephone number and national ID number
  • Birth certificate
  • Death certificate (if applicable)
  • Two guarantors’ ID numbers and registered telephone numbers
  • Copy of sponsorship letter (if applicable)

Applying as a Second or Subsequent Applicant:

  1. Download HELB App: Visit Google Play Store and download the HELB Mobile Application.
  2. Register Details: Enter your first name, phone number, email address, National ID, and KRA PIN number to generate a PIN. Ensure your Safaricom number is used for Mpesa transactions and registered in your name.
  3. Financial Literacy: Read the mandatory financial literacy notes and complete a brief question and answer session.
  4. Loan Application: Click on loans, then select undergraduate loans to access the Subsequent Loan Application Form (LAF). Fill in the required details and submit.
  5. Verification: Pay Kshs. 1 from your MPESA account to verify your telephone number.

Note: If you’re not a Safaricom subscriber, you’ll be directed to the portal to apply using the application form. Print and submit the form to the HELB Student Service Centre on Mezzanine 1 Floor at Anniversary Towers.
