An attempt by medics to rescue a patient ended on a sour note after an ambulance they were riding hit and killed an11-year-old minor in Longonot, Naivasha.

Angered by the midday incident, irate members of the public turned their fury on the driver of the ambulance forcing him to flee for his life.

During the incident along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road, the county ambulance that it attached to Naivasha Sub-county hospital was extensively damaged before police intervened.

Trouble started after the ambulance that was headed to Mai Mahiu to rescue a patient hit the boy at Longonot center killing him on the spot.

A witness Samuel Maina said that the ambulance was at high speed when the incident occurred adding that residents did not understand the rush yet there was no patient on board.

“On realizing that the ambulance was empty, members of the public turned their anger to the driver and the ambulance, forcing police to intervene,” he said.

Naivasha DCIO Isaac Kiama confirmed the incident adding that the driver had since recorded a statement and an inquest file opened.

“During the incident, a minor unfortunately died and the ambulance was extensively damaged but traffic officers are investigating the case,” he said.

Meanwhile, a 30 yearold man was lynched in the nearby town of Mai Mahiu after he was caught stealing chicken from one of the homes.

This came amid a rise in cases of cattle rustling in the semi-arid area raising fear and tension among area residents.

A village elder Simon Mbuthia said that several homes had lost chicken and livestock to unknown persons before the suspect was nabbed.

“He was caught red handed carting away over ten chickens using a gunny bag and members of the public beat him to death,” he said.

The bodies in both incidents were taken to Naivasha sub-county hospital mortuary according to the DCIO.
