Believe it or not, Taylor Lautner and his wife, Tay Lautner (née Dome), had never watched the entire Twilight film series — until now.
“After we finished the Harry Potter franchise, we were trying to find another franchise to watch. So, we landed on the Twilight series,” Tay, 27, revealed on the Wednesday, January 29, episode of their podcast “The Squeeze.” Taylor, 32, hilariously added: “Heard of it.”
Neither had seen the Twilight films in a “long time” — something Taylor said enhanced his viewing experience.
“It was good. Pleasantly, [it] was really enjoyable,” he said. “I feel like a lot of the things I watch that I’ve done is just tough because you just tend to just critique yourself and just be hard on yourself and be like, ‘I wish I would have done that better, or wouldn’t have done that.’ I know that when I’ve watched them before I have done that, and it’s been tough for me to watch them and enjoy them. This time, I would say, was just a totally different experience.”
He continued: “I was able to sit down with you and really just sit back, relax and like, it didn’t feel like I was watching myself. I just was able to remove myself from the movies and just, like, as a fan, watch them. And also say, ‘Wow, these are actually pretty enjoyable.”
Taylor famously starred as Jacob Black — a werewolf and rival love interest to Robert Pattinson’s vampire Edward Cullen — in all five Twilight films, including 2008’s Twilight, 2009’s New Moon, 2010’s Eclipse, 2011’s Breaking Dawn: Part 1 and 2012’s Breaking Dawn: Part 2.
Tay, for her part, was also worried that revisiting the book-to-movie adaptations would be “cringe,” but was instead pleasantly surprised.
“They’re so magical for me, so it’s probably one of my favorite movie franchises and books. So, I was a little nervous to watch it,” she shared. “But I’m happy to report, I loved it just as much. I actually kind of forgot some things, too, which is surprising.”
Taylor proceeded to ask his wife whether her stance on being Team Edward or Team Jacob had changed after their rewatch. (Tay previously admitted that she had a childhood crush on Pattinson, 38, in a June 2022 Instagram video.)
“I don’t know,” she replied. “To me, you and Jacob are two different people because I watched the movies before I knew you. And knowing you as a full-blown adult, it’s not the same human to me.”
Tay, who wed the actor in 2022, even said she got “emotional” watching Taylor in a scene from Eclipse, in which Jacob embraces Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan to keep her warm. “Getting to see you be 17, it was the first time it was you for me,” she gushed. “But it was really tender because it was you at 17, 17-18, and here you are, like, 32 now. It just kind of made me emotional seeing you, ‘cause it’s crazy to think you’ve literally lived a whole life before I knew you.”
As for which of the Twilight films Taylor now considers his favorite? “The last two are just definitely my favorite,” he revealed. “Of course, I love New Moon and have a soft spot for it because that’s like ‘Jacob’s movie’ or whatever. And I love the action in Eclipse and the tone of Eclipse. But just in terms of the best, most enjoyable movies, I think the Breaking Dawns.”
Having checked Harry Potter and Twilight off their movie franchise watchlist, Taylor suggested they binge The Lord of the Rings series next. Tay, meanwhile, suggested they instead watch the Star Wars franchise.
The couple were introduced by Taylor’s sister, Makena Moore, and began dating in 2018. Taylor popped the question in 2021 and the two tied the knot the following year.
