United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, confirmed the passing of Miriam Opondo, one of the party’s secretariat members.

In a statement shared on social media platforms, UDA announced that Opondo’s death was sudden. Until her demise, Opondo was in charge of the Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in the ruling party.

“With a heavy heart, the UDA Party wishes to notify its members of the sudden and tragic death of one of its secretariat members, Miriam Opondo.

“Until her demise, Ms Opondo, who was hearing impaired, was the UDA Party Officer in charge of the Persons with Disabilities (PwDs),” UDA’s statement read in part.

The party relayed a condolence message to Opondo’s family while vowing to stand by them during their difficult moment.

“UDA fraternity takes this early opportunity to relay its condolences to Opondo’s family during this very difficult time.

“May her soul rest in eternal peace,” UDA added.

UDA did not immediately reveal the cause of her death.

Her role

Opondo was part of the team that represented UDA during the launch of the National Disability Multi-Party Caucus (NDMC) to bring together Political Parties in Kenya to enhance inclusive multi-party democracy.

The programme, currently in its 3rd year, delivered several activities to support 20 Political Parties in Kenya to embrace inclusive multi-party democracy.

Besides her role in UDA, Opondo also played a critical role in carrying out pieces of training for PWDs interested in taking a stab at politics.

She also played a key role in sports representing basketball players with disabilities and was vocal in pushing for proper representation and compensation.
