Wendy Williams’ Attorney Filing Motion To Terminate Her Guardianship Amid New Mental Evaluation
Wendy Williams’ attorney is taking legal action to terminate her guardianship, filing a motion as she prepares for a new mental evaluation.
Legal Move to End Guardianship
Wendy Williams is taking a significant step in her ongoing battle for independence. The former talk show host, 60, signed an affidavit on Wednesday afternoon requesting a judge to terminate her court-ordered guardianship, according to TMZ.
Williams reportedly asserted that she has “regained [the] capacity” to manage her own affairs, challenging the continued oversight of her guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, who has controlled her personal and financial matters since 2022.
Upcoming Medical Evaluation
Sources close to the situation told TMZ that Williams is set to undergo a medical evaluation next Tuesday, an assessment that was arranged by her legal team. If the evaluation supports her claim, her lawyers plan to file an emergency motion pushing for an end to the guardianship.
Even if the judge denies the request, Williams’ legal team has reportedly prepared an alternative strategy. Insiders claim that the media personality will demand a jury trial to present her case publicly, potentially extending the legal battle further.
When reached for comment, one of Williams’ attorneys declined to speak on the matter. However, her other lawyer, Jason Atlas, expressed confidence in a resolution that serves Williams’ well-being. “Everyone in the case has Wendy’s best interests at heart, and we all expect that the ultimate outcome will be in line with those best interests,” he stated.
New Documentary Sparks Public Interest
The legal push follows the release of TMZ Presents: Saving Wendy, a documentary now streaming on Tubi, which has reignited public concern over Williams’ condition. The documentary sheds light on her current living situation in a New York facility, which Williams described as more restrictive than she ever anticipated.
In the documentary, the beloved former Wendy Williams Show host revealed the extent of her isolation. “No, no. I am not allowed to go out. I can call you, but you can’t call me,” she told Harvey Levin. “In the last 30 days, I went out twice.”
TMZ’s footage captured Williams standing at her fifth-story window, speaking via phone since visitors are not allowed inside the facility. Expressing frustration, she maintained that she is mentally sound and capable of reclaiming control over her life. “This system has failed from top to bottom regarding this guardian and everybody involved with that,” Williams said. “I want my freedom back.”
Disputing Dementia Claims
The legal battle also comes amid conflicting reports regarding Williams’ health. Earlier this month, her guardian reportedly informed a judge that she would be open to allowing a new medical evaluation. Williams, who was previously diagnosed with dementia at Weill Cornell Medical Center, has strongly denied suffering from cognitive impairment.
In a candid interview with Charlamagne tha God on Jan. 16, Williams painted a bleak picture of her current circumstances. “My life is f–ked up,” she admitted. “I feel like I’m in prison. I’m definitely isolated. I keep the door closed, I watch TV, listen to the radio, and look out the window. Sit here as my life goes by.”
As Williams moves forward with her legal fight, the upcoming medical evaluation could be a crucial turning point in determining whether she regains control over her life and finances.
