Nairobi residents and its surrounding environs have been asked to brace for heavy rainfall on Friday, January 31, 2025.
In the latest weather advisory issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) on Thursday, January 30, 2025, several parts of the city and other satellite towns will experience downpours starting in the morning.
According to the weatherman, the rainfall is likely to disrupt activities as it has been predicted to start at 9:00 am.
Some of the areas expected to receive high rainfall on Friday according to Kenya Met’s advisory include Westlands, Kasarani, Kibra, Embakasi East, Lang’ata, Dagoretti South, Starehe, Mathere, Kamukunji and Embakasi North.
Surrounding areas such as Thika Town, Gatundu, Limuru, Kabete, Lari, Kiambaa, Juja and Ruiru are also expected to experience rainfall in the morning.
“Nairobi Metropolis Weather Update; 9 am Fri 31 Jan 2025 Expect moderate to heavy rainfall, with some areas likely to experience VERY HEAVY rainfall (>50mm) and isolated storms.
“Stay Prepared: Be weather-aware and ready for potential disruptions,” the weatherman warned.
Heavy rainfall
Apart from Nairobi, regions in the highlands east and west of Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern, Southwestern and South Rift Valley are likely to experience rainfall.
These are the areas of Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, and Homabay, and Migori and
Narok counties.
“Rainfall is expected to continue over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and the South-eastern lowlands during the first half of the forecast period though a few areas over Southwestern and South Rift Valley are likely to experience rainfall throughout the forecast period.
“Morning rains are expected over few places. Afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over a few places occasionally spreading to several places,” Kenya Met said in its latest advisory.
This comes as the Climate Prediction and Applications Center (ICPAC) of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) said that Kenya, Burundi and Tanzania will receive more rainfall than usual in the coming week, leading to floods.
“The expected very heavy rainfall is likely to lead to flooding incidents. Communities in high-risk areas are advised to exercise caution during this period,” it said.
