National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has joined President William Ruto in sending condolences to the United States (US) following a tragic mid-air collision in Washington, D.C. that resulted in multiple fatalities.
In a heartfelt statement on January 30, 2025, Wetangula expressed deep sorrow over the incident, which involved an American Airlines passenger plane and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter.
He also extended condolences to Sudan following another air tragedy in the country.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic plane crashes that have claimed innocent lives in Sudan and Washington, D.C. These heartbreaking incidents remind us of the fragility of life and the profound grief that comes with unexpected loss,” Wetangula wrote on his official X account.
While extending his condolences, he assured both countries of Kenya’s solidarity during this difficult period, emphasizing the bonds of friendship, resilience and mutual support between nations.
“Kenya stands in solidarity with both the American and Sudanese people during this difficult time. Our nations share deep bonds of friendship, resilience, and mutual support. In grief, we find unity, and in unity, we find the strength to overcome. May those affected find peace, and may the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace,” he added.

President Ruto had also conveyed his sympathies in an earlier message.
Ruto said that Kenya’s thoughts and prayers are with the American people following the accident.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the terrible air accident in Washington, D.C. May the Almighty give strength to the families, President Donald Trump, and the people of the United States of America during this difficult moment,” Ruto said.
Tragic mid-air collision
On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, an American Airlines flight carrying 60 passengers and four crew members collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River, a few kilometres from the White House.
The passenger plane had departed from Wichita, Kansas, and was moments away from landing at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport when the collision took place.
The military helicopter was on a training flight when the two aircraft crashed and plunged into the river.
A large-scale search and rescue operation is underway, with approximately 300 emergency responders deployed.
Authorities have described the conditions as extremely rough, with cold temperatures and strong winds complicating the rescue efforts.
Hypothermia remains a major concern for any potential survivors and first responders involved in the operation.
Trump’s message
U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged the tragic accident, stating that he was closely monitoring the situation.
“I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident that just took place at Reagan National Airport. May God bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise,” Trump said in a statement.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance and other officials have also urged the public to keep the victims and their families in their thoughts and prayers.
