Woman arrested over mother’s death in Makueni

Detectives in Makueni County on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, arrested a 43-year-old woman in connection to her mother’s death. 

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) noted that Kamanthe Makato was arrested in Matiliku village where her mother’s lifeless body was lying after her gruesome murder.  

DCI explained that the victim, 71-year-old Mukeli Makato was fetching firewood alongside her grandchild when her daughter joined them. 

Shortly after, a misunderstanding arose between her and her daughter causing tensions which further escalated to violence. 

Consequently, detectives state that the daughter attacked her mother and hacked her to death, the grandchild, perturbed by the turn of events fled the scene and called for help. 

Officers immediately flocked the scene where they discovered Mukeli’s body lying in a pool of blood, with the bloodstained weapon on it. 

The body bore deep cuts from the head to the legs. 

“The victim, 71-year-old Mukeli Makato, was fetching firewood with her grandchild when Kamanthe joined them. A misunderstanding erupted between the mother and daughter escalating into a violent frenzy that ended in horror as Kamanthe violently attacked her mother, hacking her to death. The terrified grandchild fled the scene, screaming for help.

Police at the scene moved the body to Kilome Nursing Home Hospital Morgue pending autopsy. 

The weapon was also recovered from the scene and retained as exhibit. 

“Responding swiftly to the distress call, police officers arrived to find Mukeli’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood, bearing multiple deep cuts from her head down to her legs. The murder weapon, a blood-stained panga, was recovered at the scene and retained as exhibit.”

The 43-year-old person of interest in the case is undergoing processing pending arraignment.
